The accompanying photograph depicts our lovely Miss SA, Nicole Flint, performing some weird and wonderful "bow before the ancestors" routine in yet another bead and loin-cloth outfit that apparently is her "traditional dress" for Miss World. Nothing wrong with the wearer and nothing wrong with the outfit.
What is cause for concern is the fact that we live in a multi-cultural society yet our "national costume" or "traditional dress" is now a kraal frock year after year, without fail. Actually, unlike many countries, we don't have a "national costume" or "traditional dress" as I posted previously.
What does strike me as a tad odd is that all these caucasian representatives appear on an international stage in something "African" as a rule these days. Given that we live in a multi-cultural society where all cultures now have equal status, do you think we will ever see a black Miss SA wearing a Voortrekker Rok at Miss World or is that just pushing it a bit far?
