33 years ago, Glynis Fester represented South Africa at the 1977 Miss Universe pageant in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She didn't win or place, but she was present to witness the coronation of the first black Miss Universe in the history of the pageant. Janelle Commisiong from Trinidad & Tobago won the pageant, a feat that was duplicated by her countrywoman, Wendy Fitzwilliam, in 1998.
